UCDP records organised violence as discrete georeferenced events with a best estimate of fatalities. Aggregated to a monthly series it gives conflict tempo; kept as points it gives the density map on the news page.
Both views come from the same fetch, which is why the fetcher caches the raw geometry rather than reducing it to counts on the way in — a decision worth making once, at the point of ingestion.
The best estimate is conservative by construction. Where UCDP cannot corroborate a figure it does not guess, so this undercounts, particularly in the least accessible conflicts.
